Petrarca, figura cabdal del Renaixement, ens ha deixat un llegat literari impressionant, tant per la quantitat com per l'elevació del seu pensament; en són un magnífic compendi les dues cartes que publiquem. La primera va dirigida a la posteritat, és a dir, a tots nosaltres, i ens cal llegir-la: és una autobiografia ensems objectiva i apassionada. La segona, una epístola adreçada al seu gran amic Giovanni Boccaccio, és una mena d'apologia de la seva vida i de la seva tasca; en ella es mostra plenament conscient de la transcendència dels seus estudis i de la seva obra, destinada a obrir nous camins en el llindar d'una nova època. Les dues cartes poden ser llegides com un testament vital i literari de l'humanista per excel·lència.
