La segona, una epístola adreçada al seu gran amic Giovanni Boccaccio, és una mena d'apologia de la seva vida i de la seva tasca; en ella es mostra plenament conscient de la transcendència dels seus estudis i de la seva obra, destinada a obrir nous camins en el llindar d'una nova època. Les dues cartes poden ser llegides com un testament vital i literari de l'humanista per excel·lència.
