J. W. Goethe (1749-1832) es, no hace falta decirlo, una de las cumbres mayores de la cultura europea. Pero el hombre que fue tantas cosas diversas -político, crítico de arte, botánico, geólogo, filósofo (el menos metafísico, desde luego, de los filósofos), darwinista antes de Darwin... y todos los etcéteras con que se quiera alargar esta lista-, que tantas cosas averiguó e indagó en su curiosidad insaciable, fue ante todo, y sobre todo, un poeta. En este libro encontrará el lector una selección de sus poemas fundamentales, enlazados por esos dos hilos que fueron también los hilos que guiaron la vida y la obra de Goethe: el amor y el conocimiento, quizás las dos caras de una misma moneda. Las versiones que aquí se ofrecen pretenden desmomificar al clásico, revivirlo, con sonido español, para que el lector pueda disfrutar de los poemas como tales poemas. Enrique Baltanás (Alcalá de Guadaíra, Sevilla, 1952) -autor de esta traducción- ha sido profesor de Literatura Española en la Universidad de Sevilla. Es autor de cuatro libros de versos: Ex libris (1993), El círculo del tiempo (1995), Las señales del fuego (1997) y Papel de música (1998). Su última publicación es una antología poética de Vincenzo Cardarelli, El tiempo tras nosotros (2001). En prosa ha publicado un libro de paseos literarios por los alrededores de su cuarto, Viaje al Guadaíra (1998), y un ensayo algo polémico, Las columnas de Hércules. Realidad o invención de Andalucía (1999). Su novela A punto de dejarlo obtuvo en 2000 el Premio «Tifios», que concede la ONCE. Ha ejercido la crítica de novedades literarias en publicaciones como Renacimiento, Reloj de Arena, La Mirada, Mercurio o Clarín.
