ANTES DE QUE NUESTROS CORAZONES SE INCENDIEN (ROMANETTI, VALENTINA) (Poesía)

SOMBRAS ENTRE LAS LUCES (ARRIAGA, OZ) (Poesía)

The Book of Mankey?s?dramatic narratives tell the story of Les Mankey, a grief-stricken dentist who retreats to a rural cabin and encounters a collector of arcade games, a church busybody, and a girl who talks to a newt. In the legacy of epic poems and the?Book of Job, Pierce brings humor, music, and the risk of spirituality to this chapbook, parts of which have been published in?New South,?Birmingham Poetry Review,?Ninth Letter,?Relief, and?Poet Lore.?

Rarely does a writer come along whose depth of clarity hits home as does the work of Ken Marshall. His short yet powerful stories take us into a world visited briefly by the media. This is usually only after the violence has become so great that it can no longer be contained within the periphery, better known as America's inner-cities. We journey with him through neighborhoods that businesses have long since abandoned. Politicians ignore them until time for their elections. Inferior education reigns in our schools. The "victims are further victimized" by a long held belief that "they are just lazy, good for nothing and should be able to pull themselves up by their boot straps as many others faced with similar circumstances have been able to do." Kenneth Marshall's work gives a voice to those who, against all odds, continue to survive, forcing the rest of us to bear witness to the harsh reality of their lives.

CONSPIRACY OF LEAVES (BABIAK, WENDY) (Poesía)
Wendy Babiak's Conspiracy of Leaves feels like a mixtape made by a dear friend who wants to stir up your endorphins but also challenge you to think. Her poems are at once deeply personal and resolutely political, direct and ornate, conversant in the language of science but unafraid of the spiritual and ecstatic. She'll teach your brain myriad new ways to juggle. Tim Horvath Author of Circulation Conspiracy of Leaves leads us along the trajectory of a deeply feminine poetics, the kind that writes "pen in my left hand and rolling pin in my right," speaking "beatnik beatitudes" with a welcome herb-garden-variety skepticism unafraid of spinning utopias. Babiak sings: "if I were a dragon I would dress in drag" and "Death comes to call and I'm all out of cookies" and "I wish I could sew us a few pairs of wings." Delighted, we at once put our trust in the wise, hilarious, sophisticated magic of this voice. It is a voice capable of imagining itself absolutely anywhere, starting from the fertile dirt floor of creation's kitchen and springing up into an astronaut's-eye view. Hooti

SHAG (VICKERMAN, SUE) (Poesía)
These are poems with strong, straight-talking narratives punctuated by keenly observed birds amidst the bleak land and seascapes of northern Britain. This early collection of poems by Arts Council (UK) award-winning writer Sue Vickerman is about relationships that are illustrated, if not shaped and directed by, that sometimes harsh world that is ?nature?. Her poems have been described as ?windows onto worlds where various degrees of unsatisfactoriness are revealed? The essential mode is ?watching? and Sue Vickerman?s gaze is uncompromising, direct and wide-ranging; her language dense and gritty, at home on the edge of things? - Linda France (editor, ?Sixty Women Poets?, Bloodaxe Books).?Salty, stony, fierce, loving, and sometimes sharp? Poems that will ruffle your feathers, full of acute glimpses of the underneath of things? - Julia Darling.?Edgy, elemental, tender, they help me to understand more about what it is I?m doing, being human? - Subhadassi.

Cicada Chimes is set over a twenty-four-hour period covering several years in time lapse; it moves from a funeral service in Rookwood, to a honeymoon in Paris, to the morning markets in Serres, Greece, and a church service in Surry Hills. The twenty-four-hour time structure is Helen Koukoutsis? way of exploring the effects of her father?s death and mother?s grief on her Australian-Greek Orthodox identity. Written with understated humour, these poems smile at the tensions between marriage and motherhood, memory and forgetfulness, and life and death.??Poignant, bittersweet memories. A journey from Greece to Australia, to Europe and back into the Ithaca of one?s self. Poems that are lean, stripped to the bones of language with the calm tenacity of Emily Dickinson. Helen Koukoutsis questions tradition, religion, society, academia, her own strengths and frailties as a daughter, sister, wife, mother. And all the while the chimes of the cicadas in Rookwood Cemetery are ringing in her ears, following. Forever.? ? Peter Skrzynecki OAM?In her impressive debut collection, Helen Koukoutsis moves among ?homes and tables?
