El interés que despierta la obra en cuestión estriba fundamentalmente en el hecho de constituir una antología de autor de materiales líricos ya impresos, y sobre todo de ofrecer variantes significativas -a veces incluso relevantes- respecto a la versión de 1587 (que, por der Cosme el editor del libro, deben considerarse especialmente autorizadas). Este fenómeno revela un cuidado y una atención por la escritura poética inesperadas, y poco en la la línea con la imagen vulgata de mero versificador de ocación que él tiene.
