Bendito Harry es una novela extremadamente moderna en su capacidad de sátira y en la sardónica negrura de su humor, pero con la fuerza y las peripecias del mito más antiguo. Con ella empezó a ganarse Peter Carey el puesto que ya disfruta entre los grandes novelistas australianos de la actualidad. Sus títulos siguientes (Oscar y Lucinda, El embaucador y La inspectora de tributos, todos ellos publicados en Alfaguara) han confirmado el acierto inicial.
