Denver cabbie Brendan Murphy--known to all as Murph--has two goals in life. First, to earn no more than it takes to keep his bohemian lifestyle afloat. Second, to never, under any circumstances, get involved in the lives of his passengers. In The Heart of Darkness Club, the third in novelist Gary Reilly's Asphalt Warrior series, Murph once again fails spectacularly at his second goal the minute he picks up a mover named Trowbridge. Movers in Murph's world are not to be confused with movers and shakers. Trowbridge pays his fare with a crisp five-dollar bill. Later, Murph finds an enigmatic handwritten note on the bill. Murph can't get the message out of his head, believing it was specifically directed at him. He sets of in search of his passenger, the meaning of the message, and the inner workings of his very soul.

Cuatro historias contadas por los cubiertos de la mesa, en las que se evidencian distintos problemas sociales. En cualquier lugar llamado país, donde generalmente sus habitantes se deben de encontrar como en su propio hogar, es también muy común que, a veces, surjan situaciones extrañas, desde casi ridículas a inmensamente serias, dentro del ámbito de la convivencia. O también situaciones más o menos atribuibles a diversos problemas sociales que nos llaman poderosamente la atención. Las cuatro historias aquí relatadas son una especie de exposición de hechos cotidianos, en los que se intenta referir unos casos que, sin ser reales -o considerados ficticios-, podrían llegar a ser perfectamente auténticos; y donde en la realidad se clasificarían como incidencias derivadas de verdaderos problemas sociales. El primer caso es contado por una cuchara. Se narra la historia de su dueño, una persona viuda, mayor, a quien sus hijos prácticamente abandonan dentro del ámbito afectivo y en el que por diversas circunstancias el discurrir de la vida le da un giro espectacular a su existencia. El segundo es narrado por un tenedor. La historia versa sobre la peligrosidad de malcriar a un niño convirtiéndolo en maleducado y demasiado consentido por parte de su padre,del cual siempre obtiene lo que quiere. No recibe ninguna enseñanza de la importancia que tienen los valores a las cosas sencillas; no se le imponen límites ni responsabilidad alguna, ni se le exige control u obligación. El tercer caso es relatado por un cuchillo. La narrativa nos muestra las aventuras de un cocinero y nos sumerge en el ambiente viciado de la noche, el juego, el amor y la muerte. El cuarto y último caso es contado por una cucharilla especial. Se nos relata la aventura de una niña confiada y autosuficiente quien, por diversas casualidades, acaba herida en un cementerio de basuras, donde casi pierde la vida. Afligida y vejada por las circunstancias, vislumbra otras formas de vivir muy distintas a las que ella conocía.



El fracaso era su éxito; ella, quien con la misma intensidad amaba y olvidaba. Para ella, que habita en mí, que vive en ti; en lo hondo de tu pecho, en mis dedos, de ellos. Ursula, an eccentric, middle-aged writer, likes to walk almost as much as she likes to write. One day in the spring of 2013, possibly to avoid the digital network where she makes her living but also just because it's a beautiful day, Ursula puts her hat on her head and sets out along her favourite thoroughfare, Queen St. West, in Toronto. Walking, thinking, watching and talking, Ursula opens to her neighbourhood. She visits a bookstore, goes to the bank, has lunch with a friend, attends a dress fitting, posts a scathing letter to the mayor, and considers having her hair cut. She chants om. She picks flowers. Walking is Ursula's way of greeting Mother Nature. This is her way of honouring her favourite writer of all time, the flâneur Robert Walser. This is bliss. But every sunny day must come to an end, and every walk must turn homeward again. As a soft rain begins to fall, Ursula is overcome with grief, loss, and regret. Will she find relief from her pain?
