La primera vegada que algú s?embarca cap a Mallorca, sempre troba un espontani que li diu, amb cara de circumstàncies, que «les illes ja no són el que eren», amb una mica de sort, potser diu «ses illes», amb el sobreentès «segurament no ignores, talòs, que allà parlen així». Si ens porta a veure un partit de futbol, ens informarà, a la sortida, que aquell dia l?equip local no ha jugat gaire bé; si ens du a escoltar l?orquestra simfònica, que es notava que no havien assajat prou; si ens acompanya a veure una exposició, que els quadres no estaven ben il·luminats. I sempre ens deixarà entreveure, amb satisfacció, que en altres ocasions ell sí que ha vist un bon partit, sí que ha disfrutat d?un bon concert, sí que ha visitat bones exposicions. Pretén fastiguejar-nos? No. El que fa és tractar d?autovalorar-se, però només sap fer-ho a costa nostra: és un esnob. La paradoxa del majordom és un assaig lúcid, documentat i alhora divertit sobre el fenomen de l?esnobisme. I també, és clar, una vacuna per no caure-hi nosaltres també.

Viatge d'hivern és un homenatge literari a Schubert, a Bach i a la música, que honora al mateix temps la pintura, simbolitzada per Rembrandt. A la vegada, és un repertori de passions humanes, un repàs a la història interior d'Europa i un recorregut geogràfic de Viena a Treblinka i d'Oslo a Bòsnia, passant pel Vaticà. Els relats que el constitueixen, situats en èpoques i llocs diferents i amb protagonistes que canvien d'un a l'altre, saben mantenir, tanmateix, una misteriosa unitat que el lector copsarà a mesura que els transiti: a poc a poc, els contes se li aniran convertint en un ordit narratiu d'exquisida subtilesa, com qui va teixint, a partir d'històries diverses, el canemàs d'una novel·la singular.

En 1917 el Endurance daba por concluida una fracasada e histórica expedición a la Antártida que zarpó al comienzo de la Primera Guerra Mundial. Sir Ernest Shackelton partió al mando de esta última gran aventura polar sin esperar siquiera alcanzar la meta, constatando que los mapas son a veces simples imposibilidades. ¿Hasta dónde se puede confiar en el orden que se presenta como inamovible?
