La necessitat d'iniciar l'aprenentatge del català o d'ampliar-ne els coneixements es fa especialment difícil de resoldre a aquelles persones que, per motius diversos, no poden assistir als cursos presencials. Per això s'ha dissenyat l'obra Català sense distàncies, amb materials pensats i elaborats per a l'autoaprenentatge, fet que no exclou la possibilitat d'utilitzar-los en un curs reglat amb professor.Els continguts es distribueixen en sis graus didàctics que reben alhora un tractament teòric i pràctic. Hi són objecte d'anàlisi els textos com a unitat comunicativa per excel·lència i la gramàtica entesa en el sentit més lat del terme: aspectes de morfosintaxi, lèxic, fonètica i ortografia. Es presenten, a més, uns temes d'estudi que permetran tenir uns coneixements generals suficients sobre l'origen, la història i la situació actual de la llengua catalana. La profusió d'activitats acompanyades de les claus corresponents afavoreix l'autoavaluació dels progressos assolits.La programació del curs es basa en els programes de llengua catalana dels nivells intermedi i suficiència elaborats per la Secretaria de Política Lingüística. La consecució d'aquests nivells vol dir tenir els coneixements de llengua catalana necessaris per a desenvolupar-se amb normalitat, correcció, fluïdesa i creativitat en qualsevol situació comunicativa oral i escrita.
