ON FRAGILE WINGS (Sin clasificar)

This book gives a counselor?s insight into some of the difficulties that young people have in reaching adulthood. The author was a player in high school integration issues in the South from the beginning until the present. Her first experience was in a school where Whites were in the minority, while Blacks and American Indians formed an approximately equal majority. In her subsequent experience, the students consisted of a similar mix of Whites, Blacks and Latinos, all of whom were struggling to survive. The issues for both of these student bodies were so similar that it implies they may be universal. The issues included poverty, pregnancy, incest, racial integration, abuse, privatization of schools, busing and school consolidation. The author speaks in the language of the South. This reinforces the Allegory that drives many talented writers to generate the myths and fictional shadows until even Southerners believe them. This yields a particular emotional appeal. The author was spokesperson for the students, teachers, administrators, and parents.

A TIME OF TERROR (Sin clasificar)

“I had done nothing that could really be called bad. I had been foolish, yes, but I had not done anything bad. The trouble was, this was Marion, Indiana, where there was very little room for foolish black boys.” On a sweltering August night in 1930, two older boys invited sixteen-year-old Jimmie Cameron for what they said would be a joyride. Instead, they held up a young white couple parked in a remote Lover’s Lane. The stickup went horribly wrong. The boys were arrested, dragged from jail by a mob, and lynched on the courthouse lawn before thousands of spectators. Miraculously, Cameron lived to tell the story. He began writing his account while still a teenager, traumatized by the lynching and confined in a maximum-security adult prison. A talented storyteller, Cameron shows us the humor and horror of coming of age as a black child during the Jim Crow era. Populated by unforgettable characters both kind and cruel, A Time of Terror is a poignant story of anger and courage, forgiveness and redemption. The memoir ends when Cameron leaves prison at age twenty-one, vowing to “pick up the loose ends of my life and weave them into something beautiful, worthwhile, and God-like.” The book’s Afterword by his protégé Reggie Jackson describes what Cameron accomplished in his next seventy-one years as a civil rights pioneer, working man, self-taught historian, writer, father of five, and founder of America’s Black Holocaust Museum. The 3rd edition includes never-before-published chapters. It begins with a Foreword by James W. Loewen, author of Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong, explaining how Cameron’s story offers a corrective understanding of American history. The Introduction by educator Fran Kaplan and historian Robert S. Smith gives the reader an easily grasped and thorough grounding in the cultural context of young Cameron’s life.  To further support the reader–especially those of high school and college age–this edition contains 50 vintage photographs. Over 100 annotations next to Cameron’s text provide definitions of the era’s expressions, background on the characters and historic events he mentions, and fun facts. This book, the only account ever written by a lynching survivor, is a unique and highly readable historical resource. It deserves a place alongside the works of other African American memoirists, such as Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, Richard Wright, Maya Angelou, and President Barak Obama. Like the diary of his contemporary, Anne Frank, Cameron’s memoir is an intimate view of a teenager’s life forever changed by the brutal reality around him. A Time of Terror is appropriate for secondary and post-secondary school course adoption, as well as university “common reads” for entering freshmen. Online guides are available for educators and book clubs. Praise for A Time of Terror: “The narrative is at once thrilling and unnerving–and interspersed with humor and philosophical reflections on humanity's predicament….An inspired meditation on individual human endeavor, comparable to Richard Wright's Bigger Thomas, but with an uplifting ending.” – Dr. Stephen Small, African American Studies, University of California–Berkeley “This book and the history it recalls are vital reminders to us all, not only of the tragic national past, but the ongoing present reality of how racial injustice can poison the minds, hearts and institutions of a culture.” – Tim Wise, antiracism educator and author of White Like Me: Reflections on Race From a Privileged Son

BEYOND THE FINISH LINE (Sin clasificar)

Are you an athlete transitioning from a career in sport and silently struggling along the way? Or perhaps you didn’t realize how you would feel when your athletic career ended and how difficult transitioning to life beyond would be. You are not alone. Krista’s forthright tell-all of her journey to the 2012 Summer Olympic rowing podium, as well as what came after, will help you find closure and peace, as well as a safe place to relate, laugh, and reflect on the “what next?” after sport. In sport, as in many other high-pressure niches, strength is an asset and discussion about weakness is not openly publicized. In telling her story, Krista is unmasking the face of retirement from sport. You will find relief in realizing that representing something strongly doesn’t mean you always feel strong inside. Not only are admitting weakness and showing vulnerability encouraged by Krista, she will show you that sharing and uniting in struggle is actually part of the healing process. Breaking the silence and candidly sharing her struggles, you will hear a relatable account of what happens emotionally and physically after your athletic career ends and be better prepared when it is your time. You will gain insight into the journey of chasing a dream and, more notably, perspective on the journey that commences when you retire and begin to navigate the world beyond full-time sports.

THE ULTIMATE JOURNEY (Sin clasificar)

A revolutionary book written as a memoir and self-empowerment travelogue illustrating the journey our soul takes on its quest to self-realize. You will learn how to: find inner peace, release negative emotions and experiences, find true love, learn how to meditate, lose weight, regain your health, and create abundance in every area of your life! Each chapter explains a different facet of the challenges we face in everyday life.   Synopsis: Deep down there is a desire in all of us to feel loved and accepted.  Most are searching for something that was once known, and is now lost. Often the opportunity to uncover our truest self hasn't been realized, causing us to wander through life in search of it. We seek out relationships, material gain, and prominence to fill the emptiness we feel within. Most times what we seek fails us, leaving us helpless, angry and addicted to the chase.    Within us rages a battle, a tug of war between our spirit and our concept of who we think we are. The soul is ruthless in its longing to self-realize, overriding our trivial desires and pursuits. It would rather see us surrender, than to waste away entangled in this worldly facade. If you are reading this, then I can safely conclude that your soul is at the forefront. Are you ready to let go of the past and embrace the present moment… do you want to create an amazing future? If you are willing to find the answers, and to finally stop getting in the way, then this book is for you!    This is my journey of how a soul became a body entwined within a world that it lived in.  This memoir handbook explains the process of how we can transcend the conditioning and enslavement of this world, and feel the love we came here to reawaken.

Using Entrepreneurship to Prepare for Retirement This book has been written to achieve two goals:   Goal One:  To raise awareness as to the need for most of us to take preparation for our financial well being seriously as many of us reach retirement without actually being able to retire.  Our government retirement pensions just don't provide enough for us to survive on and live comfortably once we reach this age.  Through this book's pages, I show you what to look forward to in retirement and how you will struggle and possibly be forced to continue to work throughout your retirement years just to be able to survive from day to day.   But this book is not written with the goal of stressing you out about your future.  It is written with a view to helping you strategize how to change the above scenario to a much better reality.  By starting now - basically ahead of your retirement years, you can through starting an at-home business, give yourself a much more comfortable retirement reality.  Throughout the book, I show you a number of ways that you can earn extra income - predominately online.  These incomes, by the way, can grow so significantly for you after even just a few years, that you may well be able to retire well ahead of the government's plan for you to retire sometime in your sixties.   There is a lot of life you can grab out there with just a little extra work during the years that you have the energy available to you to put in the extra effort.  I can show you how to get started. Within these pages, I discuss to significant levels of depth, a number of ways you can make money online so you have more information available to pick directional business directions that suit your skills and temperament and so you can get started on your new business venture.  Already retired and possibly struggling financially?  This book is for you as well.  You may be starting late in life but through this book you will learn ways to start earning income in even just a few short months.  Incomes that can make your current existence easier. So be sure to grab this book and make your way through it.  There is a lot of solid content in here and for just a few dollars spent, it very seriously could change your entire financial future.  I look forward to seeing you on the inside! NOTES FROM THE 48TH NORTH (Sin clasificar)

Isolde Martin returned to her home of Germany after more than three decades of life as an expatriate, which saw her live on five continents and in six countries. Additional travels included short stays in many more countries and trips around the globe in either direction three times. After settling, at long last, in Germany, Isolde keenly and painfully felt the loss of the many friends and acquaintances now scattered across the world. Her efforts to stay in touch eventually resulted in poignant, charming, and often witty notes, an attempt to stay connected to friends in distant places – friends she appreciated and loved, and refused to lose to this very day, seven years later. Now compiled into this single collection, Notes from the 48th North, offers a stream of consciousness that has been written in moods that range the emotional gamut, refl ecting her feelings of loss, isolation, and confusion, whilst also exploring issues that have compelled her to write. One could say that the Notes continue a conversation that can no longer be held in person over a cup of tea. Notes from the 48th North is a must-read for anybody who has travelled, felt the pangs of friendships long separated, or simply enjoys the poetic nature of observation.

VALORACI— ESTATICODINˆMICA GLOBAL (Sin clasificar)

A PLACE CALLED HOME THE GUNGGARI STRUGGLE FOR LAND (Sin clasificar)

A Place Called Home chronicles the Gunggari’s people struggle for recognition of their Native Title. Like many colonized people throughout the world the Gunggari who belong to the South West of Queensland in Australia have had extraordinary obstacles placed in their way to achieving Native Title. For Gunggari, like all other traditional owners in Australia, the journey was made doubly difficult because treaties were never signed between the colonisers and the people they dispossessed. Gunggari laboured from 1996 until today to establish their rights to the land before the Australian courts. Their quest was confounded by changes in the legal system as well as obstruction from Aboriginal groups who clearly abused their powers. Nevertheless, Gunggari stayed united and focused and through their spokesperson, Robert Munn, negotiated skillfully until in 2012 the Native Title Tribunal recognized their rights to the lower part of their country, Gungggari continue their struggle today and hope that the Native Title Tribunal will recognize their rights to the upper part of their country by the end of 2015. Many of the things in this book illustrate the level of cultural vitality and resilience which marked the people and their activities throughout the last 120 years since colonisation. The Gungarri of South West (SW) Queensland, Australia, have lived in, and taken care of, the country reaching from the headwaters of the Maranoa River in the Chesterton Ranges to the junction of the Maranoa and the Balonne for centuries before Europeans began to occupy the country about the mid-1850s. Despite dispossession, dislocations and disruption, the Gungarri survived over the past 170 years in terms of language, kinship and descent, bound together by history, common experiences and a rich oral history. They identify themselves as Gungarri, their knowledge of ritual and spiritual associations is strong and they continue to identify with the country, which has been handed down to them by their forbears. As a people, they have never surrendered their lands to the invaders and they have over the years followed a number of strategies to retain and regain possession of their lands when the opportunity arose. This account of the Gungarri struggle for recognition and acknowledgement of their rights to their country, invites the reader to participate in their efforts by focusing on: Gungarri traditions and beliefs, social organisations and lifestyle before colonisation Gungarri resistance to colonisation, the imposition of non-Gungarri laws, land dispossession and dislocation the ways in which the Gungarri have retained their connections with the land and their efforts to regain it, where possible, over the last two decades. The information presented is based on existing literature dating back to the mid-1800s, as well as oral traditions collected over the past 45 years by means of interviews, focus groups and workshops. It’s not always an easy book to read because some of the stories are sad. People were removed from their country, they were excluded from Australian society, their children were taken from them. They were put in the lowest strata of society in the country town in which they lived. But it’s also a hopeful book because it shows how both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people in the end began to forge a united platform in terms of Gunggari native title rights to that region of South West Queensland. “The land is everything. It’s where we were born, it’s where we hunt, it’s our spirit, and where we belong. It comforts us and gives us hope for the future.” Lynette Nixon, Gungarri woman, 2014.

PLAYING OUT IN THE WIRELESS DAYS (Sin clasificar)

In this poignant sequel to Headlong into Pennilessness, Sheffield-born Michael Glover, poet and art critic, re-visits the scenes of his childhood and teenage years in and around Fir Vale.     He remembers the death of the Sunbeam Cinema, and how it disappeared in a pother of brick dust. He sees again the tramps from the tramps’ ward, hurrying down Herries Road in pursuit of a warm sleeping spot in the Reference Room of Firth Park Library. He watches his mother at her exasperating daily ritual of putting her hair into pink curlers to the general indifference of the entire family, who all co-exist, somehow, in that hot little kitchen in Coningsby Road, site of perpetual warfare between snapping relatives, as the homework gets down, somehow, on the kitchen table covered in its slippery oil cloth.     It’s all here, from playing out on your bike in near trafficless streets, to spinning round and round the gas lamp at the top of Blyde Road until the whole world turns giggly-topsy-turvy.
