Hace 300 años, exactamente el 16 de enero de 1716, Felipe V sancionó el Decreto de Nueva Planta de Cataluña. En él desplegó una de las figuras judiciales más características del derecho castellano: los alcaldes mayores. Dos tenientes de corregidor, con formación letrada-uno para las causas ordinarias civiles de primera instancia y otro para las criminales- fueron los responsables de auxiliar al corregidor y gobernador militar y político de Barcelona en materia judicial. Nuestro objetivo ha sido estudiar la figura de los dos alcaldes mayores o tenientes de corregidor de Barcelona entre 1718 y 1808, desde una triple óptica: la sociológica, la municipal y la judicial.



Linares cuenta con un patrimonio variado y extenso en su territorio que va desde Cástulo, pasa por los numerosos vestigios minero-industriales y cobra amplio sentido en la propia ciudad con las edificaciones y espacios públicos que responden a las características sociales, artísticas, económicas y culturales de las etapas históricas en que fueron construidas. Como apostillara el maestro de obras por la Real Academia de San Fernando, Manuel Calderón y Pérez del Camino, autor de numerosas edificaciones en Linares: “El florecimiento o la decadencia de cada pueblo están reflejados en el aspecto de su arquitectura”. El presente libro se ha concebido como un trabajo de investigación que profundiza en el patrimonio inmobiliario linarense desde varios puntos de vista: el crecimiento y la evolución de su trama urbana a lo largo del tiempo, la valía artística de sus edificaciones más significativas, los contextos históricos en los que surgieron y la repercusión que han tenido de cara a la sociedad a la que pertenecen. Pero si importante es conocer la incidencia de las edificaciones en el desarrollo local, tan importante como aquello es conocer su intrahistoria: bajo qué criterios se hizo necesaria su construcción; qué significaron y significan en el paisaje urbano; qué acontecimientos y secuencias guardan y tuvieron lugar entre sus paredes; cómo están vinculadas a los linarenses… A fin de cuentas, el pulso y la vida de quienes las hicieron posibles y las habitaron proyectándolas hacia el presente. Todo aún pervive como un eco que se deja oír a través de las múltiples historias que nos ofrecen. A todo ello se acerca este libro, indagando en la Historia artística y social de los edificios linarenses.

Una precuela de las monografías anteriores del autor sobre la Gran Guerra y las causas de la Guerra Civil Española, este libro analiza el difícil desafío y a menudo violento camino hacia la modernidad. Durante los casi 30 años analizados (1892-1921), España parecía estar atrapada en una especie de Groundhog Day (Día de la Marmota). En la última década del Siglo XIX el país tuvo que enfrentarse a una mortífera guerra colonial y al círculo vicioso de terrorismo y represión brutal dirigida por oficiales del ejército, principalmente en Barcelona, que culminó con el asesinato del primer ministro conservador, Antonio Cánovas, en agosto de 1897. Casi un cuarto de siglo más tarde, España se veía de nuevo convulsionada por un conjunto similar de circunstancias: un conflicto imperialista en Marruecos y un nuevo ciclo de brutal lucha social, con su epicentro en la ciudad condal, que culminó de nuevo en el asesinato de otro primer ministro conservador, Eduardo Dato, en marzo de 1921.
