La guerra civil fue la forma más extrema, cruel y generalizada de violencia durante buena parte del siglo xx. El vórtice de su huracán arrasó países, partió naciones y aniquiló comunidades en Europa, Asia, África y América. Ninguna herramienta funcionó mejor para desplegar revoluciones o repelerlas, construir naciones, expulsar a minorías étnicas o políticas, asegurar dominios territoriales y recursos económicos o aniquilar al enemigo interno. Finalizada la era de los grandes conflictos internacionales a mediados del siglo pasado, las guerras civiles son el tipo de enfrentamiento armado más recurrente en el mundo. Con más de 20 millones de víctimas y 65 millones de refugiados desde 1945, es difícil disputarle el primado en las escalas del terror contemporáneo. Comunidades rotas traza la historia de las guerras civiles de los siglos xx y xxi, y para ello se mueve por los diferentes conflictos internos que han caracterizado la era contemporánea. Analiza multitud de casos y ciclos bélicos como los de Rusia, Finlandia, Irlanda, Italia, China, Yugoslavia, Grecia, Corea, Indochina, Guatemala, Congo, Ruanda, Afganistán o Chechenia, entre otros.
