Desde la creación de la Cátedra de Historia de la Medicina de la Universidad de Málaga en 1976, con la llegada del profesor Juan L. Carrillo actualmente catedrático de la Universidad de Sevilla, uno de los objetivos investigadores de la misma viene siendo el análisis de la relación existente entre las distintas variables sociales y los conflictos sanitarios, fundamentalmente de índole colectiva, dentro del marco de la ciudad de Málaga. este trabajo es una nueva aportación a este proyecto recogiendo su contenido, en líneas generales, el de la Tesis de Licenciatura de Isabel Jiménez Lucena que trabajando dentro de estas líneas metodológicas se ha acercado al conocimiento y explicación de la más grave crisis sanitaria que se padeció en esta ciudad tras la última confrontación civil.

El siglo II después de Cristo, fue la época de los mejores emperadores que tuvo Roma, después de Augusto; así, Nerva, Trajano Adriano, Antonio Pio y Marco Aurelio representan lo que se ha dado en llamar la "Edad de oro de los Antoninos". Comienza este trabajo al final de ese siglo, en el año 193, cuando la turbulenta Era de golpes de estado que a la larga llevarían a la ruina a Roma se encabezaba con el magnicidio de Cómmodo. Trata esta obra de una figura sencilla y de humilde origen, hijo de un liberto, que alcanza por sus propios méritos la máxima magistratura del Imperio Romano. Nos referimos al emperador Publio Helvio, de sobrenombre Pertinax. Apenas gobernó tres meses, desde el 1 de Enero del año 193 al 28 de Marzo en que fue asesinado. Este casi desconocido príncipe, que se situaba en la tradición de sus mejores predecesores, concibió sorprendentes proyectos en tan corto espacio de tiempo.

Als set llibres de La guerra jueva, Flavi Josep (37 dC c. 100 dC) narra, com a testimoni presencial, la revolta dels jueus contra Roma. El punt culminant d'aquest conflicte, la destrucció del Temple de Jerusalem, va fer canviar per sempre més el rumb de la història del judaisme: Josep que és vist com un traïdor pels jueus i, pels cristians, gairebé com un testimoni del naixement del cristianisme s'erigeix, així, en un autor imprescindible per a comprendre la història jueva. La lectura de la seva obra, gairebé dos mil anys després, continua resultant, encara avui, absolutament apassionant. Els llibres segon i tercer, que comprenen els fets esdevinguts des de l'any 4 aC fins al 67 dC, narren l'expansió de la insurrecció jueva i culminen amb un dels moments més recordats de la guerra, l'espectacular deserció de Josep al camp romà. Com és habitual, el volum conté l'original grec i la traducció catalana, a càrrec d'Andreu Martí, i un gran nombre de notes aclaridores a cura de Joan Ferrer.

La Universitat de Barcelona, fundada l’any 1450, és una de les institucions més antigues i consolidades de Catalunya, i en la seva història conflueixen els grans esdeveniments de la història del país: l’esplendor dels orígens medievals; l’exili a Cervera després de la desfeta de 1714, que es perllongà fins a mitjan segle XIX; el retorn a Barcelona, amb la creació de l’Edifici Històric al cor de l’Eixample i la puixança progressiva que culminà amb la República; els anys foscos del franquisme i, finalment, la represa democràtica i el restabliment de l’autonomia universitària, que han fet possible l’excel·lència i el prestigi de què gaudeix actualment la institució. El llibre que teniu a les mans és el relat d’aquest camí, un llarg camí ple de vicissituds que començà fa gairebé sis segles i que, en un procés continuat de millora, es projecta amb solidesa cap al futur.

Les paraules dels qui visqueren els esdeveniments dels últims cent deu anys de la història de Catalunya posen en contacte el lector actual amb els fets que han configurat el nostre present. Els darrers anys, malgrat que ens siguin pròxims cronològicament, resulten llunyans i borrosos, especialment entre les generacions més joves, però també entre molta altra gent. En aquesta antologia, cada document va precedit d'una introducció que situa el lector i l'ajuda a comprendre'n l'abast i el context. El llibre —destinat al gran públic, si bé també serà útil als estudiosos especialitzats— arrenca de la Restauració borbònica del 1875 i arriba als primers anys del règim autonòmic fins a l'elecció de Barcelona com a seu dels XXV Jocs Olímpics l'any 1986. Les veus dels coetanis ens comuniquen les il·lusions, les frustracions, els conflictes i els projectes dels qui ens han precedit.
