El territorio que hoy llamamos América está habitado desde hace alrededor de 50.000 años. Desde entonces, mucho ha llovido. Tal vez hemos de creer que el dios Tlaloc derramó sus fecundas lágrimas sobre los aztecas y, con ellas, se multiplicaron los jardines y los templos en la incomparable Tenochtitlán. Quizá fueron las súplicas a la Virgen de Guadalupe, grabada sobre la tilma de Juan Diego, las que hicieron florecer la literatura y el arte en las tierras que conocieron el galope de las amazonas. Lo evidente es que la fecha de 1492 dio un giro copernicano a la Historia universal. Cierto es que no fueron tiempos amables los de la conquista, pese a los consagrados mitos que azuzaron a los hombres de Castilla a lanzarse a la aventura de hallar la fuente de la eterna juventud o las siete ciudades de Cibola. Las once mil mulas cargadas con cien libras de oro cada una, que un día salieron de Cuzco para pagar el rescate de Atahualpa, nunca llegaron a su destino, y tampoco han sido dulces, sino más bien amargos, los sucesos que, entre catástrofes naturales, dictaduras y bancarrotas, han sacudido buena parte de América Latina en las últimas décadas. No sabemos si el Paraíso estuvo en el Nuevo Mundo, como pensara León Pinelo, pero de haber sido así, a buen seguro su banda sonora debió de ser parecida a On earth as it is in heaven, la sugerente música preambular de La Misión.

Este libro es un estudio profundo, serio y concienzudo sobre una de las instituciones más importantes de la España de la Edad Moderna, en su faceta de cliente de artistas y consumidor de obras de arte. A lo largo de sus diversos capítulos, este trabajo de investigación nos va mostrando y explicando todas las iniciativas artísticas que se desarrollaron en este destacado centro desde la fundación de la Universidad por el Cardenal Cisneros, hasta su desaparición en el siglo XIX, su carácter, su importancia y su significado. La construcción de sus edificios, lla dotación litúrgica de iglesia y capillas, el adorno de sus salas, el encargo de sepulcros, cuadros y aparatos efímeros y series progagandísticas, son episodios que van imbricándose para, finalmente, ofrecernos una explicación global del fenómeno del patronazgo artístico de una institución cultural que, por su propia idiosincrasia, ofreció rasgos ciertamente muy particulares a la hora de servirse de las artes para los más varidos fines.
