Jaume Massó i Torrents (Barcelona, 1863-1943) va ser una figura cabdal en la transformació, el desenvolupament i l’actualització de la cultura catalana entre el darrer quart del segle XIX i el primer terç del segle XX. Excursionista recol·lector de cançons populars, fundador de la revista L’Avenç (iniciadora del Modernisme), periodista, narrador, poeta, editor d’obres dels clàssics catalans medievals, erudit bibliògraf, historiador de la literatura catalana, cap de l’editorial catalana de L’Avenç, que publicà moltes obres d’autors moderns i antics tant catalans com estrangers, membre fundador de l’Institut d’Estudis Catalans, promotor de la Biblioteca de Catalunya, president del Centre Excursionista de Catalunya i de l’Ateneu Barcelonès, la seva trajectòria il·lustra tota una època, del Modernisme al Noucentisme.
