Michel Amelot protagonizó uno de los episodios más singulares de la abigarrada historia política y diplomática del amanecer del Setecientos. Durante el decisivo lustro que discurre entre la primavera de 1705 y los días finales del verano de 1709, justo cuando el teatro de la guerra motivada por la sucesión hispana conocía en la arena peninsular el desdoblamiento civil de su inicial dimensión europea, Amelot asumió la doble condición de embajador de Luis XIV ante Felipe V y la de premier ministre de ese mismo monarca. Encarnación suprema de la férrea tutela política sobre la monarquía hispana entonces dispuesta por Versalles, adquirió así Amelot un protagonismo mayúsculo en todas las intensas deliberaciones del tiempo. Revestido con tan inusual autoridad política no sólo intervino en los debates inmediatamente derivados de los tortuosos avatares de la guerra, sino que también auspició aquellos otros que en la estela del conflicto, y bajo la excepcional y controvertida atmósfera de la tutela, entonces suscitaron la tradicional forma de gobierno o el particular orden comercial de la monarquía. Y la Correspondencia aquí traducida constituye un observatorio inmejorable para analizar los precisos estímulos e intereses que infundieron la animación de esa tutela, la específica manera en que la misma se concretó y procuró encauzarse y orientarse, y los particulares términos en los que finalmente se desmoronó y que terminaron evidenciando la tensión inherente a un desdoblamiento de personalidades políticas como el ensayado con Michel Amelot. El lenguaje político de la teología católica y el Príncipe Cristiano de Pedro de Ribadeneyra (Madrid, 1998) y Gobernar la ocasión. Preludio político de la Nueva Planta de 1707 (Madrid, 2008), se ha ocupado también de la edición crítica de las Memorias para la historia de las guerras civiles de España del Conde de Robres (Madrid, 2006). Trabaja ahora sobre los lenguajes políticos que desde finales del Seiscientos dieron forma a un proceso de introspección identitaria en la monarquía hispana. Julen Viejo (Portugalete, 1961) es profesor titular del Departamento de Historia Moderna de la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Ha publicado numerosos estudios sobre la relación entre religión y política en la Monarquía Católica y en la actualidad trabaja sobre las posibilidades de conformación de una sociedad civil en la España del XVIII a partir de las relaciones entre pasiones y orden político.
