Tanto la hechicería orientada al maleficio como el curanderismo capaz de revertirlo eran aprendidas en las Salamancas, escuelas en las que se enseñaba simultáneamente a hacer daño y a repararlo. En esos ámbitos se formaban hechiceros y médicos. Estas creencias nativas se mantuvieron durante largo tiempo como cultura alternativa frente a la ortodoxia religiosa. En Las Salamancas de Lorenza se analiza la continuidad hasta nuestros días de estas prácticas consideradas por la inquisición como el fruto de un pacto diabólico. En su relato, tan vívido como sugerente, Judith Farberman evoca a Lorenza -una india santiagueña acusada junto a otras mujeres de practicar la hechicería- como guía para internar al lector en ese mundo de las salamancas mestizas y para invitarlo a un diálogo profundo entre el pasado y el presente.
