Si les littératures latine et castillane se sont très tôt intéressées à la figure du Cid, l'apparition de ce héros dans l'historiographie est assez tardive. Certes, les chroniques latines de la première moitié du XIIIe siècle rapportent quelques-uns de ses hauts faits, mais ce sont celles en castillan, postérieures à 1280, qui lui accordent une place de choix. Les épigones jouent un rôle essentiel dans ce processus de récupération de la matière cidienne, qu'il s'agisse de nouveaux épisodes bâtis autour de la figure de Rodrigo Díaz ou de passages résultant du réagencement de sources déjà connues. Comme dans toute écriture médiévale, continuité et rupture, loin de s'opposer, se conjuguent. L'assimilation différentielle de ces épigones cidiens dans la « Versión de 1283 » de la « Estoria de España », dans la « Versión de 1289 » et dans la « Crónica de Castilla » met en évidence une double évolution : celle des liens qui unissent le roi à Rodrigo, paradigme du bon vassal, et celle des dispositifs discursifs. C'est à un véritable renouvellement du genre historiographique que le processus de réécriture ouvre ici la voie.
