La historia española de los siglos modernos está muy influenciada por la presencia de la Iglesia y la acción del clero, pero dentro de este aparente monopolio eclesiástico, actúa una compleja red de estrategias familiares, clientelares y políticas que adaptan a su intereses concretos las normas del derecho canónico, como muestra el autor reconstruyendo la tipología de la organización beneficial y acercándonos a los hombres y mujeres que mueven las instituciones eclesiásticas.





Este libro ofrece una nueva mirada sobre el El hombre práctico y su autor, el conde de Fernán Nuñez (1644-1721). A partir de nuevas fuentes se exploran otras circunstancias y otros contextos que, más allá del ambiente intelectual de los novatores, rodearon la producción y difusión de su obra. Poner en relación la vida y obra del III conde de Fernán Nuñez permite subrayar lo que de identidad y memoria aristocráticas retiene su acción de escritura. El hombre práctico-texto y el hombre práctico-autor constituyen la materia de este libro, en el que, desde una perspectiva socio-cultural y a partir de las posibilidades que ofrece el enfoque biográfico, se analizan los valores, discursos y prácticas de la sociedad cortesana y los procesos de construcción y transmisión de memoria dentro del linaje.













Jacques Le Goff, uno de los mayores estudiosos de la historia medieval y director de investigaciones de la Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, plantea en este texto el hecho de que la ciencia histórica, incapaz de reunir los puntos extremos de la historia del mundo, su inicio y su final, se ha inclinado hacia el mito a la hora de afrontar los problemas de los orígenes, y ha cedido su lugar a las religiones de la salvación o a las utopías del progreso cuando ha dirigido su mirada hacia el futuro. Y esta manipulación de la historia se traduce igualmente en un enfrentamiento entre el tiempo natural y cíclico de las estaciones y el clima, y la percepción de la duración registrada por los hombres, la memoria personal y colectiva que debe hacer sus cuentas con el calendario, instrumento de domesticación y de dominio del tiempo. Así, el libro de Le Goff -complemento indispensable de Pensar la historia, también publicado por Paidós, puesto que en su concepción original constituyen una sola obra- acaba proponiendo el estudio de la memoria social como uno de los modos fundamentales de afrontar los problemas del tiempo y de la historia.
