Concluido tres días antes de la muerte de Perón, este libro, realizado a partir de una documentación inédita reunida en Buenos Aires por los grupos de trabajo de ILARI entre 1964 y 1973, constituye el primer balance completo de la experiencia peronista : balance que termina por un atestado de defunción, ya que, si Juan Domingo Perón falleció el 1.º de julio de 1974, éste y estaba políticamente muerto poco después de su regreso triunfal a la Argentina, tras diecisiete años de exilio. El estudio de Louis Mercier Vega basado en documentos de primera mano, en su mayoría inéditos en Europa pretende colocar en su debido lugar a un hombre, un movimiento y un fenómeno que fueron, tanto en Argentina como en el exterior, deformados por las necesidades de la leyenda y los artificios propagandísticos. Tres personajes como el general Uriburu, el terrorista Severino di Giovanni, Evita Perón, el gángster sindical José Rucci y el mago López Rega, hay una profunda realidad argentina que no puede ser sólo conocida a través de proclamas, slogans o mitos. Así pues este libro contribuye a la comprensión del llamado populismo tan vigente en muchos países latinoamericanos, cuyos mecanismos escapan muchas veces al observador europeo formado según esquemas muy distintos.
