Ramón Cabrera Griñó (Tortosa 1806- Wentworth 1877) es una de las figuras más atractivas del siglo XIX español. Su apasionante biografía, que atrajo la atención de novelistas como Thackeray, Galdós y Baroja, más pareciera un guión cinematográfico que una vida real. De seminarista y guerrillero, pasó a convertirse en caudillo de un poderoso ejército que estuvo a punto de cambiar la historia contemporánea de España. Su arrogante personalidad y sus deseos de venganza tras el fusilamiento de su inocente madre, le valieron fama de cruel y le merecieron el sobrenombre de El Tigre del Maestrazgo, con el que su figura pasó a las páginas de la leyenda. Convertido en aristocrático Conde de Morella, y en gentleman por su matrimonio con una joven protestante con una de las mayores fortunas de Inglaterra, vivió un prolongado exilio en su finca de las afueras de Londres, desde donde participó en todos los nuevos levantamientos armados, reales o frustrados, que protagonizaron los carlistas a lo largo de las dos siguientes décadas y fue testigo de los principales acontecimientos de la convulsa Europa de su tiempo. Tras la Revolución que depuso del trono a Isabel II, dirigió fugazmente la reconstrucción política y militar del Carlismo, hasta que su incompatibilidad con el joven pretendiente Don Carlos, más biográfica que ideológica, le llevó a apartarse de las filas en las que había militado toda su vida y acabar reconociendo a Alfonso XII. Villano, héroe o traidor, ensalzado o demonizado, Cabrera necesitaba una completa biografía que separara la realidad del mito y la historia de la desfiguración interesada. Su trayectoria, más que la de un personaje controvertido, es la del pueblo español, y en particular esa importante fracción del mismo que representó el Carlismo, en su agitado itinerario entre el Antiguo Régimen y la Restauración.
