Nacido en Uruguay en 1944, Pereda vivió muy joven las tormentas políticas del Cono Sur. En la Universidad de Constanza obtuvo en 1974 su doctorado en filosofía y en 1978 está ya en México, donde acaba siendo profesor titular e investigador en la UNAM. Se dan, pues, en él una suma de vivencias, directas e indirectas, que lo hacen participar en el cúmulo de autores europeos, árabes, africanos y latinoamericanos que han hecho del exilio (“la pérdida de la casa”, como decía Said) uno de los asuntos existenciales, pero también teóricos, de su obra. El exilio es una experiencia de vida. Interpretarla –objetivarla– yendo más allá de sí misma es el secreto de este libro. Rodeando el tema, adentrándose en él desde diversas perspectivas, cercándolo a partir de pocas experiencias singulares (los españoles republicanos, los exiliados del Cono Sur), el libro acaba en el centro mismo del problema definiéndolo como una pérdida, pero también convirtiéndolo en resistencia y celebrándolo como umbral de una vida en definitiva más rica.
