Su autor, Pierre Grimal, nos ofrece el retrato más completo del "emperador filósofo": su educación, sus obras filosóficas y su trayectoria política, en el contexto histórico y cultural del vasto Imperio romano, de cuya expansión militar Marco Aurelio (121-180 d. C.) fue protagonista.

La plata, abundante en Real del Monte, distrito de Pachuca, fue el objetivo central de la Compañía de Aventureros de las Minas de Real del Monte. Constituida en respuesta a una solicitud de don Pedro Romero de Terreros, fue organizada por hombres convencidos de que la inversión de capital inglés y de tecnología en las minas arruinadas y abandonadas de Real del Monte podría proporcionarles indudables beneficios y rehabilitaría la industria más prometedora de la nación recién nacida.

La historia del México posterior a la Independencia es un complejo laberinto poco conocido. La primera República Federal de México narra, antes que interpretar, los momentos salientes de aquella agitada época: de las elecciones para el Congreso de 1826 a la administración de Alamán; de la conspiración de Arenas a la reforma de los liberales; de la revuelta de Tulancingo a Santa-Anna, y el fin de la República Federal.

Organizaron experimentos y viajaron por Europa para estudiar médiums famosos, en su mayoría mujeres, como Eusapia Palladino. La investigación con médiums representó una vía para descubrir supuestas facultades ocultas, como la clarividencia; o por el contrario, un modo de investigar trastornos de la personalidad, «verdaderos» causantes de los fenómenos. Esta historia, hasta hoy velada en el ámbito español, nos muestra el afán científico por explorar los confines del espíritu y la mente. Confines que, como algo propio de los seres humanos, también debe ser objeto del estudio de nuestro pasado.
