Ciencia y espiritismo nos parecen hoy conceptos opuestos, pero no siempre ha sido así. Entre 1880 y 1930, el espiritismo formó parte de los grandes debates científicos de la modernidad, como el positivismo, la histeria, la hipnosis y el inconsciente. Lejos de ser un ámbito marginal, premios Nobel y reconocidos médicos estudiaron los fenómenos espiritistas. Como muestra este libro, en España varios científicos, en su mayoría doctores, se interesaron por el desafío que el espiritismo suponía para la ciencia. Organizaron experimentos y viajaron por Europa para estudiar médiums famosos, en su mayoría mujeres, como Eusapia Palladino. La investigación con médiums representó una vía para descubrir supuestas facultades ocultas, como la clarividencia; o por el contrario, un modo de investigar trastornos de la personalidad, «verdaderos» causantes de los fenómenos. Esta historia, hasta hoy velada en el ámbito español, nos muestra el afán científico por explorar los confines del espíritu y la mente. Confines que, como algo propio de los seres humanos, también debe ser objeto del estudio de nuestro pasado.
