Entre los viajes de exploración de Colón y los de James Cook discurren tres siglos de expansión colonial europea. El libro no se limita a una exposición de estos tres siglos, sino que más bien pone de relieve que el descubrimiento del mundo de ultramar fue, junto con la industrialización, el desafío de mayor gravedad al que se vieron confrontados los europeos en los últimos tiempos.



La cultura popular se’ns mostra com un estil de vida compartit pels membres de cada nucli rural, un bagatge tradicional i comunitari que funcionà com una poderosa eina que cohesionava cada poble i li permetia resistir millor les novetats que tractaven d’imposar els poderosos. Aquesta obra subratlla que els riberencs sempre tingueren una manera de concebre la identitat molt més cultural (religiosa i lingüística) que ètnica. També explica com d’intenses foren les transformacions experimentades en l’estil de vida (alimentació, habitatge, maneres de vestir, mobiliari, vida familiar, etc.) durant els segles XVI, XVII i XVIII.
