El llibre que el lector té a les mans vol ser una aproximació al complex procés que va conduir a la formació, a Barcelona, de la Unió Federal Nacionalista Republicana l'abril de 1910 i al paper que hi va tenir Pere Coromines, esdevingut un dels principals líders del partit d'ençà de la seva fundació. La UFNR era la continuadora del Centre Nacionalista Republicà, nascut el 1904 arran d'una escissió que es produí a l'interior de la conservadora Lliga Reigionalista. Els escindits de la Lliga es postularan com els capdavanters d'un catalanisme que es reclama més clarament nacionalista, obert i progressista que el regionalista. D'un catalanisme que té com una de les seves fites màximes treballar per a la consecució de la República. Aquestes són les línies mestres del projecte polític nacionalista republicà que s'inicia en el 1904, i que el 1910 experimentarà un important salt qualitatiu arran de la fundació de la UFNR, considerat el primer partit polític catalanista, progressista i republicà en la història política catalana. Partit de trajectòria breu, erràtica i contradictòria, si bé remarcable per diversos conceptes, sobretot tenint en compte que aquesta herència política serà recollida, el 1931, per Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya, el partit central de la vida política catalana entre 1931 i 1939. La recerca vol resseguir la trajectòria del nacionalisme republicà entre els anys 1904 i 1910, tot inserint-la en el marc polític general català -i espanyol- i, en especial, en dos dels episodis cebtrals de la Catalunya de començaments dels segle XX: Solidaritat Catalana i la Setmana Tràgica, que tindran una incidència directa en la gestació, desenvolupament i consolidació del projecte polític nacionalista republicà.
