Nicolau de Mediona va exercir com a notari a Barcelona entre 1432 i 1461. De la seva activitat professional en resten actualment vint-i-quatre manuals i llibres a l'Arxiu Històric de Protocols de Barcelona, a més d'un fragment de llibre de procures conservat a l'Arxiu Històric de la Ciutat de Barcelona. Entre aquests protocols s'ha conservat un llibre de comptes particular d'aquest notari: és aquest el llibre que publiquem. S'ha conservat per una rara casualitat, segurament perquè el notari aprofità per a escriure'l el gran nombre de pàgines en blanc que havien quedat sense utilitzar en el llibre d'una marmessoria, la de Bernat Joan de Montpalau, donzell. Els comptes de Nicolau de Mediona i especialment les notícies complementàries que els acompanyen ens proporcionen un punt de vista divers del que ens forneixen els contractes notarials. Les notícies complementàries il·luminen molts aspectes que ens passarien desapercebuts en el protocol. Per exemple, a la venda de censals i violaris entre particulars s'hi adverteix millor l'obligatorietat del lliurament de penyores o d'escriptures d'algun bé immoble que garantís el pagament de la pensió. Hi veiem com les penyores són venudes si el pagament de pensions s'endarrereix o com es tornen quan el censal es redimeix, de manera que el seu caràcter de préstec queda més patent. Com a llibre de comptes particular, que no fou escrit per a ésser conservat, el volum de Nicolau de Mediona és absolutament sincer, i aquí resideix el seu interès.
