Aquest any 2006 commemorem el setanta-cinquè aniversari de la proclamació de la II República i els setanta anys de l?esclat de la Guerra Civil..Sens cap dubte, a l?enaltiment i la idealització dels vuit anys de la Segona República hi han contribuït de manera decisiva els esforços i els resultats obtinguts durant aquells anys en matèria educativa que, sense exagerar, podem qualificar de revolucionaris. És, clarament, en aquesta etapa republicana quan convergiesen i culminen tots els esbossos i avenços iniciats molts anys abans. Efectivament, a Catalunya i especialment a Barcelona i el seu entorn de municipis, ja des dels primers anys del segle XX, es troben les propostes més pioneres de la renovació pedagògica que consideren l?escola i el seu entorn com un mitjà per la formació moral i social de l?individu.

El periodo que abarca este volumen es el siglo en que Inglaterra se convirtió en la primera nación industrial, aproximadamente entre 1750 y 1850, época no sólo de intenso cambio económico y social, sino de experimentos, ideologías y políticas sociales.

El volumen recoge la mayor parte de las ponencias presentadas a la VI edición de las Jornadas sobre La batalla de Bailén y la España Contemporánea celebradas en octubre de 2005, centradas en esta ocasión en instituciones y mecanismos que catalizaron la primera fase de la revolución liberal española del ochocientos. En este contexto temático, diferentes especialistas plantean sus reflexiones sobre el modo en que instituciones instituciones como la Monarquía o el Ejército se vieron sacudidas por la convulsión revolucionaria; sobre como se intentó contenerla, o cómo y de qué manera la sociedad a través de la cultura, en este caso la música, percibió y expresó la nueva era marcada por el jaque al Antiguo Régimen.
