El gran imperio español en América, con sus 16 millones de habitantes, se disolvió entre 1810 y 1824 a causa de los movimientos de independencia. Pero este fenómeno no parece haber tenido un gran impacto en la opinión pública española de ese momento. Así parece demostrarlo la escasa participación de los españoles comunes en los esfuerzos por la conservación del imperio.

Obra básica de la historiografía moderna sobre los orígenes de la cultura europea. Este libro no sólo examina las cuestiones arqueológicas del tema sino que proclama un decidido rechazo de cualquier interpretación racista de la formación de Occidente.
