A fines de 1604 el padre jesuita Andrés Pérez de Ribas, de 28 años de edad, marchó con los soldados de Diego Martínez de Hurdiade a la “provincia de Cinaloa”, donde había de permanecer 16 años. Su libro describe la conquista del noroeste de la Nueva España de manera casi novelada, poniendo no pocas veces de relieve el proyecto expansionista de la compañía de Jesús, que le encargó la redacción de este libro fundamental en la historia de la Nueva España.
