El amplio contexto filosófico y literario en que se inscribían las imágenes del llanto, tan difundidas en la poesía de los Siglos de Oro, fue dúctil en la pluma de sor Juana. Su perspicacia conceptual y su diestro manejo de los diversos registros y estilos poéticos recogen legados tan sugerentes como la tradición penitencial del llanto o como la equivalencia entre lloros y discursos de raigambre petrarquista, e incluso, de manera innovadora para su época, repara en el valor material y sensorial de las lágrimas. Todo ello, centrado en la búsqueda de un equilibrio ético que permita aquilatar los alcances y las limitaciones del lenguaje.
