El trabajo considera la naturaleza e importancia del humor en las novelas de Tom Sharpe y la forma en que éste sirve de vehículo para expresar el desencanto que siente ante la sociedad actual. El fenómeno del humor se discute de forma general al princpio estudiando las diversas teorías que existen sobre éste y cuáles se consideran relevantes como modo de captación de la realidad por parte de Sharpe. Sigue un breve repaso a la tradición cómica en la novela inglesa contemporánea, en el que se intenta establecer si existe de verdad un humor nacional analizando su literatura. La vida y la obra de Sharpe proporcionan el telón de fondo para pasar al estudio pormenorizado de los mundos que forman su novelística en la que se refleja un desencanto evidente y que se repite dentro de su actividad creadora.
