A la contracoberta de la primera edició d'Històries naturals (1966), Primo Levi afirmava: «He escrit una vintena de contes i no sé si n'escriuré més. Els he escrit, en general, d'una tirada, intentant donar forma narrativa a una intuïció concreta, intentant narrar en termes diferents (si són simbòlics, ho són inconscientment) una intuïció que avui no és gens estranya: la percepció d'un estrip en el món en què vivim, d'una escletxa, gran o petita, d'un «defecte de forma» que invalida un o altre aspecte de la nostra civilització o del nostre univers moral». Afortunadament va escriure molts més contes, una part important dels quals va recollir en dos altres volums, Defecte de forma (1971) i Lilit (1981); contes que ara, coincidint amb els vint anys de la seva mort, Teresa Muñoz ha traduït per primera vegada al català. Escrits des d'una doble perspectiva científica i humanista, tenyits de poesia i ironia, aquests contes constitueixen un pont entre el present i el passat, entre el somni i la realitat, entre l'absurd i la raó, un pont que se sustenta en l'extraordinària lucidesa de l'autor.
