La música es un arte que la historiografía ha obviado a menudo. Este volumen pretende contribuir a la corrección de este desinterés y acercarse al fenómeno musical desde una metodología deudora de las nuevas corrientes de historia cultural, cada vez menos indiferentes a esta manifestación artística. Cogiendo como hilo conductor las bandas de música valencianas, el libro nos adentra en un periodo de transformaciones sociales que hacen posible el progresivo acceso de mucha gente a una cultura musical que mezcla componentes universales con otros de locales, en un proceso en que interactúan manifestaciones propias de la cultura de élite y de la cultura popular. Las bandas, sostenidas por la sociedad civil, jugaron un notorio papel protagonista al final del siglo XIX y principio del XX, y se convirtieron en motor artístico y en uno de las señales de identidad valenciana por excelencia.
