Hacia el año 1517 un libreto era la diversión de la gente de letras. Primero en copias manuscritas, después impreso, se lo pasaban de mano en mano, lo comentaban en las capillitas entre risas o sonrisas de complicidad. En él aparecía el papa Julio II, muerto pocos años antes, que se presentaba a las puertas del cielo con la pretensión de entrar a las buenas o a las malas; pero san Pedro le paraba los pies, le hacía una buena repasada y lo despachaba con buen viento. Quizás se lo había ganado, aquel hombre temible y belicoso, ¡pero era el papa! La gente comentaba, y lo aseguraban los entendidos, que el autor del libreto era Erasmo, un humanista de prestigio, un cristiano íntegro, de talento agudo y cáustico.
