Una virtud muy meritoria, si se tiene en cuenta que él jamás rehuyó la realidad presente para elevarse a una estratosfera especulativa que preservara su discurso del decurso del tiempo. Al contrario, el compromiso con el problema espiritual y social de su realidad histórica, la encarnación con el coetáneo sentir, pensar y querer de la Iglesia, es valiente y diáfano. En su verbo se conjuga lo efímero y convulso de la realidad española de su tiempo con ese horizonte metahistórico que sólo alcanzan los clásicos o los santos. Puede decirse que Martín-Sánchez se ató con vigor y esperanza al mástil de la compleja situación española –con una cruentísima guerra civil en pleno inicio de su presidencia– evitando caer en ilusorios cantos de sirena, o en lamentos agoreros de sombría parca.
