Pero esta posición se ve hoy amenazada por el inmenso poder de los medios de comunicación electrónicos. James O?Donnell, en este libro ingenioso y perspicaz, realiza una aguda lectura de las promesas y amenazas de la tecnología electrónica para nuestro futuro más inmediato. O?Donnell reinterpreta la actual revolución de la comunicación a través de una serie de comparaciones con períodos anteriores también más o menos revolucionarios: la transición de la cultura oral a la escrita, del rollo de papiro al códice, de la copia manuscrita a la imprenta... Las sugerentes descripciones de estos períodos análogos sugieren que nuestro acceso al ciberespacio no está siendo tan fácil como podríamos pensar. Al observar cómo han afectado las tecnologías de la palabra a la evolución de la cultura en el pasado y cómo se han aprovechado las transformaciones tecnológicas, estamos recuperando modelos que nos pueden ayudar a desenvolvernos en la transformación electrónica que se está produciendo en el presente. El autor concluye con una reflexión sobre la necesidad de reconsiderar la universidad moderna y, en consecuencia, acaba refiriéndose en concreto al estudio y la enseñanza en el ámbito de las humanidades, proponiendo procedimientos para sacar el máximo provecho de las tecnologías electrónicas sin dejarse atrapar por sus trampas.
