LEARNER STRATEGY USE AND PERFORMANCE ON LANGUAGE TESTS (PURPURA, JAMES E.)
Learner Strategy Use and Performance on Language Tests investigates the relationships between learner strategy use and performance on second language tests. To this effect, it examines the construct validity of two questionnaires, designed within a model of human information processing, that purport to measure testakers' self-reported cognitive and metacognitive strategy use. It then examines the construct validity of the FCE Anchor test, developed by the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate, to measure second language proficiency. It is a useful resource for those interested in understanding the effects of strategy use on performance, for those interested in training students to use strategies in language classrooms and for those interested in using structural equation modelling as an analytic tool for examining the effects of socio-psychological background variables on performance.

EL DOSSIER DRÁCULA (REESE, JAMES)
En 2007, una editora recibe un paquete remitido por alguien que se hace llamar Comte de Ville, y que desea permanecer anónimo. Se trata de un dossier encontrado entre las pertenencias de Bram Stoker, que han sido subastadas y han circulado de mano en mano. El dossier consta de una serie de cartas, documentos y recortes periodísticos, y del diario personal que Stoker escribió durante el año 1888. El lector irá descubriendo poco a poco que el dossier puede ser la respuesta a las preguntas aun abiertas sobre la siniestra figura de «Jack el Destripador», y que la clave del asunto la tenía el propio Stoker.

EL FANTASMA PRIM (JAMES, MONTAGUE RHODES)
El 1919, M.R. James (1862-1935) publica el tercer llibre: El fantasma prim (A Thin Ghost and Others que la col·lecció «LArcà» presenta ara en llengua catalana. Aquest volum recull tots els contes escrits per M.R. James al llarg dels darrers vuit anys de la seva vida. El primer conte, La residència de Withminster, reuneix totes les característiques de l'autor: amb erudició i distanciament, el narrador, des de bon principi, ens descriu, com qui veu un petit teatre, un despatx, ocupat per un teòleg, en el qual aniran entrant els altres personatges de la història —la seva esposa, el seu nebot i ñllol Franck, i el bescomte Saül— acompanyats d'un incessant repiqueig de campanes. Al següent, Mr. Dentón, per moblar la casa que acaba de comprar-se a Warwickshire, entra en una sala de subhastes a la recerca d'alguna cosa que l'ajudi a trobar motius per decorar-la, de tal manera que El diari de Mr. Poynter li serveix en tant de diari local i perquè hi ha dibuixades unes cortines... En Un episodi en la història de la Catedral, un conte que figura en totes les antologies que s'han publicat de M.R. James, ens tornem a trobar amb un altre erudit, Mr. Lake, que, havent-li estat encarregat que examini els arxius de la catedral de Southminster, acabarà més interessat per una tomba. A la Història d'una desaparició i d'una aparició, publicat, com l'anterior, a la «Cambridge Review», ens conta la desaparició de l'oncle Henry en quatre cartes que van des del 22 fins al 26 de desembre, signades per un desconegut amb les inicials W.R., cosa que pot ser una broma de l'autor ja que, si posem la IV de cap per avall, ens trobem amb M.R., les seves pròpies inicials. A l'últim conte, en fi, un criat serveix de nexe entre Dos metges. M.R. James se'ns mostra, una vegada més, com un mestre en l'art de crear situacions, deixant que els successius narradors les desenrotllin; no hem d'oblidar que, quan li van preguntar si creia en fantasmes, James va respondre que estava preparat per considerar les evidències —que és el que són els seus relats— i adaptar-les si el satisfeien— que és el que ha de fer el lector.
