Muchos conocían hace tiempo la existencia de Giacomo Joyce, un escrito cortísimo de James Joyce. Sin embargo, había quedado inédito porque el propietario del manuscrito no accedió hasta hace poco a divulgarlo. Lo publicamos ahora en edición bilingüe a partir de la que su biógrafo, Richard Ellmann, editó por primera vez en Estados Unidos en 1968. Para los estudiosos de Joyce este texto tiene gran importancia : fue escrito en 1914, «el año» de Joyce, cuando empezó Exilios y Ulises, escribió los dos últimos capítulos de El retrato de unartista y completó algunos poemas para Pomes Penyeach. Aunque Joyce no haya publicado jamás esta obra, la utilizó ampliamente en sus demás libros.En este breve relato, Joyce narra su atracción erótica por una joven judía, alumna suya en Trieste. En aquella época, Joyce sentía una gran obsesión a la vez por el ocaso de su juventud y por el adulterio. Para él, no sólo eran hechos reales de la vida, sino que se convertían automáticamente en temas para sus libros. También experimentaba en aquel período las mismas técnicas literarias que emplearía poco después en el Ulises. Este escrito presenta pues un gran interés no sólo desde el punto de vista biográfico sino también literario.
