WAKEFIELD Y OTROS RELATOS (HAWTHORNE, NATHANIEL)
Según Borges "Wakefield" es el mejor relato de Hawthorne y acaso uno de los mejores de la literatura. El argumento es el siguiente: Wakefield decide ausentarse por unos días de su casa y de su mujer. Le dice a su esposa que se va de viaje, pero alquila una habitación a unas pocas cuadras de su casa, desde donde puede espiar a su cónyuge. Así pasa los siguientes veinte años, hasta que un día regresa como si nada hubiera pasado.

«Recuerdo haber leído en algún viejo periódico o en alguna revista antigua una crónica que, relatada como si fuera real, contaba la historia de un hombre, de nombre Wakefield, que decidió marcharse a vivir lejos de su mujer una temporada larga...» Así comienza este relato, que Borges señaló como el más grande y perfecto artilugio narrativo de la historia, antecesor directo de los relatos de Melville y Franz Kafka. Wakefield es un hombre sosegado, vanidoso, egoísta, propenso a crear misterios pueriles. Un día dice a su mujer que va a emprender un viaje de negocios y que regresará en dos días... Ana Juan, Premio Nacional de Ilustración 2010, ha realizado un impresionante trabajo gráfico que hace aún más atractivo este relato de culto.
