De este modo me apasioné por la vida, por la lucha, por la clase obrera. Pero cuántas veces me pregunté si unirse a una masa era posible cuando no se había querido nunca a nadie, ni siquiera a los propios parientes; si era posible amar a una colectividad si a uno no lo amaban profundamente algunas criaturas humanas. ¿No tendría esto consecuencias en mi vida de militante? ¿No habría esterilizado y reducido a un puro hecho intelectual, a un puro cálculo matemático, mi calidad de revolucionario? Los escritos de Antonio Gramsci (1891-1937) siguen abriendo caminos y afinando la mirada de nuestro pensamiento político, de la evolución de la izquierda en el siglo XX y de la renovación del marxismo. La presente edición busca ampliar el conocimiento de su vida y su obra en nuestro idioma con una selección de cartas escritas entre 1909 y 1926, años que preceden a su encarcelamiento. Las cartas aquí reunidas, muchas traducidas por primera vez, recorren etapas fundamentales; desde el joven estudiante en Cagliari y Turín, pasando por el desarrollo de su actividad política y periodística como promotor y combatiente en las luchas socialistas, impulsor de asociaciones pedagógicas y consejos de fábrica, así como editor y fundador de L'Ordine Nuovo y L'Unità, hasta su etapa internacional; primero en Rusia, como representante del PCI en la Internacional y donde conocerá a su compañera Julia Schucht, para después, en Viena, gracias a una labor intensa de creación de consenso, afianzarse como dirigente comunista. El diálogo que entabla con familiares, amigos, adversarios políticos, compañeros de partido y líderes soviéticos nos permite conocer de primera mano sus inquietudes vitales, su visión estratégica de la política y el modo en que se encarnaron su firme voluntad y compromiso como intelectual y político.
