Molts monuments de Catalunya, com els de qualsevol país, han anat desapareixent al llarg dels segles. El foc, les guerres, les grans transformacions urbanístiques o, simplement, el canvi de gust han portat a la destrucció d'un llegat fonamental, massa sovint oblidat, que també constitueix la memòria històrica d'un país, tant o més que els mateixos monuments conservats. Com era, per exemple, l'antic Palau del Virrei, destruït pel foc el 1835? O com eren les ciutats de Girona i Barcelona abans de l'enderrocament de les muralles? I l'antiga església de la Rodona de Vic, desapareguda a final del segle xviii i ara parcialment retrobada? I més recentment, com va poder ser que l'emblemàtic Hotel Internacional, de l'arquitecte Domènech i Montaner, construït per a l'Exposició Universal del 1888 fos totalment desmantellat pocs mesos després? I les columnes de Catalunya, de Puig i Cadafalch, retirades per raons polítiques poc abans de la inauguració de l'Exposició Internacional del 1929? Així doncs, la Catalunya destruïda és part de la Catalunya construïda, la història d'aquests monuments desapareguts i els motius pels quals van ser destruïts forma part de la nostra història i del nostre present.Estructurat en un recorregut temàtic i cronològic, i àmpliament il·lustrat, Catalunya destruïda ofereix duess vessants: restituir la memòria d'un important patrimoni monumental que ha existit i que ja no existeix i, per primera vegada, escriure un inici d'història de les destruccions, de la intolerància, del vandalisme en general aplicat als monuments de Catalunya. Una obra cabdal que ens permet conèixer els monuments del ­passat i ens ajuda a entendre les raons que han portat els homes a voler-los eliminar de la memòria col·lectiva.
