Cuando el gran historiador Claudio Sánchez Albornoz escribió su monumental España, un enigma histórico (1957) lo hizo como réplica a esta libro de don Américo e inició, así, una de las polémicas más vivas y fecundas de la cultura española del siglo XX: la que oponía la visión de España de Sánchez Albornos, más castellanista y que hacía mayor hincapié en el elemento constitutivo germánico, a la de Castro, que consideraba los elementos judío y musulmán como decisivos en la conformación de la mentalidad española. Esta obra, convertida ya en un clásico, se terminó de escribir en Estados Unidos en 1946 y se publicó, por primera vez, en Argentina en 1948. Prohibido en España por la dictadura del general Franco, Crítica la recuperó ya en 1983: es la obra maestra de Américo Castro y la versión más afortunada y sugestiva de su formidable intuición histórica. Tras la primera publicación de este libro, y la polémica que suscitó, llena de adhesiones fervientes y críticas radicales, nada volvió a ser igual en la historiografía española.
