La esclavitud negroafricana fue compañera inseparable del proceso de colonización llevado a cabo por los europeos en América. Comprendió casi todas sus regiones, resistió en los principales enclaves urbanos y mineros, pero fue en el Gran Caribe subtropical donde arraigó con más intensidad. Unida al mundo creado por la plantación, determinó las relaciones sociales y el perfil demográfico en la larga duración. Al mismo tiempo, fruto de las manumisiones obtenidas por diferentes medios, desde la condición cautiva creció un sector de población libre sobre la que recayó, a modo de estigma, la huella de su pasado inferior+, transmitida en los fenotipos.
