A França existeix un col·lectiu format per desenes de milers de persones que parlen català, i que es defineixen a si mateixes com a "gitanos catalans". El seu origen se situa al Principat de Catalunya, sobretot a l'Empordà. Van començar a establir-se al Rosselló arran d'una llei del 1783 de Carles III que els va permetre viatjar després de segles de prohibicions, i van anar seguint dues grans rutes migratòries al llarg de la costa mediterrània i de la Garona. Avui, una dotzena de cognoms com Batista, Patrac, Ferrer, Pubill, Cargol o Malla s'escampen per bona part del país fins a la frontera amb Bèlgica en comunitats que han mantingut majoritàriament la llengua i els costums. Parlen un català, que ells anomenen gitano, diferent dels dialectes territorials.
