En 1.567, la Corona española publica una serie de decretos prohibiendo a los moriscos utilizar su lengua, vestimenta, hábitos culinarios y la práctica de sus cantos y bailes; ordenan la destrucción de los baños y todo lo que atañe a sus costumbres ancestrales. Como consecuencia, los moriscos comienzan en secreto a preparar la rebelión: eligen capitanes, fijan objetivos, mandan correos pidiendo ayuda allende la mar, determinan el mejor momento para el primer ataque y eligen un Rey o Soberano en la persona de Don Hernando de Córdoba y Válor, que adopta el nombre de Abén-Humeya comenzando una feroz guerra que se prolongó durante tres años y que tuvo como escenario todo el antiguo Reino de Granada, obligando a intervenir a los Tercios de Flandes para sofocarla. La Gran Guerra del 14 supuso un aldabonazo para la conciencia de los contemporáneos y ocasionó profundas alteraciones en todos los órdenes de la vida. España permaneció neutral oficialmente durante los cuatro años del conflicto, pero no estuvo aislada ni se mantuvo al margen de la guerra y de sus consecuencias. El delincuente pasa por tres estadios. Primero es preso en una cárcel hasta que se determine su culpabilidad y se dicte una pena.
