El incidente protagonizado por Miguel de Unamuno el 12 de octubre de 1936 en el paraninfo de la Universidad de Salamanca es una de esas estampas fijadas por el tiempo en la memoria del ciudadano español. Es un hecho tan manoseado que parece imposible decir algo nuevo. Sin embargo, en este libro se aportan nuevos documentos y puntos de vista que nos permiten verlo desde una perspectiva más acorde con su contexto histórico. Hasta ahora, los estudios sobre la guerra civil en Salamanca se han hecho poniendo la mirada en Miguel de Unamuno, el cuartel general de Franco, o la represión franquista. Pero en este libro se mezclan las tres miradas. Examinamos la evolución de Unamuno en relación con el movimiento militar, desde su primera identificación con los sublevados en julio, hasta su completo repudio, a finales de 1936, tras haber constatado la brutal represión de los rebeldes contra el inerme pueblo español, y la progresiva ascención hacia el poder de los falangistas. La estructura del libro se basa en 15 entrevistas concedidas por Unamuno a diferentes periodistas y visitantes, entre el 6 de agosto y el 26 de diciembre de 1936. A su vez se ofrecen todas las entrevistas íntegras en su idioma original, lo cual es la primera vez que se hace y también por primera vez, los ocho relatos existentes sobre el acto del 12 de octubre. Se trata, en definitiva, de mostrar al lector una amplia recopilación de documentos, así como un cuadro realista del contexto en el que vivió Unamuno durante la guerra civil. Terminando todo ello con la reconstrucción del camino seguido por el relato de lo ocurrido en el paraninfo, desde el momento de los hechos hasta que Luis Portillo Pérez lo publicó en la revista Horizon en 1941.
