La Historia es un proceso continuo, que fluye como el agua de un río. Nunca se detiene realmente, hasta que llega al mar. Puede que los ríos se separen del tronco principal, pero por mucho tiempo seguirán portando las mismas aguas que alguna vez salieron del fluyente original. Pues así como los ríos lo son, también la historia es efectivamente continua, un perpetum mobile inclasificable. Los especialistas de la Historia tienen claro lo anterior, pero no así los legos. Esta obra está enfocada a ellos, a quienes sin ser historiadores desean entender y hacerse de una idea simplificada, explicativa, estructurada y lógica del curso de la evolución de nuestra Civilización Occidental. Al escribirla pienso en mis hijos, a los que me gustaría explicarles mi interpretación del proceso histórico global del que nosotros y nuestros antepasados formamos parte. Ojalá sirva a los lectores para hacerse una idea cabal de cuál fue su pasado, cuáles son las bases culturales de su presente, y el origen de su futuro. El lector podrá considerar que se ha dado preferencia a algunos temas por sobre otros; es posible que así haya sido. Pero recordemos que ésta es una obra bastante personal, y que por lo tanto puede caer en subjetividades involuntarias. Pero, de cualquier forma, es un trabajo que puede ayudar a mucha gente a interesarse por recorrer el río continuo de nuestra propia Historia. Esperemos que así sea.

Los aztecas-méxicas fueron, por así decirlo, la fachada de una civilización originaria que floreció y se diversificó de múltiples formas desde mucho antes de la era cristiana.
