El presente libro recoge una serie de contribuciones de distintos investigadores españoles y portugueses que tienen como hilo conductor el análisis del impacto de la Reforma Católica en el territorio noroccidental de la península ibérica. A partir de ese nexo en común, se presentan diferentes perspectivas: desde el estudio de las minorías socio-religiosas en el mundo previo a Trento hasta la dimensión cristiana del movimiento obrero en el siglo xx o el turismo religioso en la actualidad. Entre ambos polos cronológicos, encontramos también estudios centrados en la Edad Moderna, que abordan cuestiones tan interesantes como el análisis del clero capitular, el asociacionismo religioso secular, la huella que dejó el proyecto tridentino en la normativa concejil en cuanto a los usos y costumbres, la vida del clero regular femenino o la poderosa figura de Martín Lutero. En suma, estamos ante un trabajo colectivo y multifocal que contribuye a entender mejor la trascendencia del programa reformista tridentino en un territorio necesitado de estudios de esta índole.

Catálogo de la exposición "LA OTRA CORTE. MUJERES DE LA CASA DE AUSTRIA EN LOS MONASTERIOS REALES DE LAS DESCALZAS Y LA ENCARNACIÓN". Los monasterios de fundación real de las Descalzas y la Encarnación de Madrid alcanzaron su esplendor en los siglos XVI y XVII, y han llegado a nuestros días en un excepcional estado de preservación. Son dos espacios todavía hoy en uso y con parte de su superficie utilizada como clausura conventual. El monasterio de las Descalzas Reales fue fundado por doña Juana de Austria, princesa de Portugal, hija del emperador Carlos V, sobre el palacio de Alonso Gutiérrez, tesorero imperial. Las obras de adaptación se realizaron entre 1558 y 1564, fecha de la consagración de la iglesia. La profunda remodelación arquitectónica del edificio incluyó la realización de un Cuarto Real y a la incorporación de una abundantísima colección artística de retratos, pintura religiosa, tapices y relicarios que en buena medida han llegado a nuestros días. El Real monasterio de la Encarnación se fundó de nueva planta en 1616 por iniciativa de Felipe III y su mujer Margarita de Austria, estaba unido al vecino Real Alcázar por un pasadizo. En ambos edificios se desarrolló una intensa visa artística durante los siglos XVI y XVII, debido a la importancia de las personas reales que los habitaban -Juana de Austria y la emperatriz María- o que los visitaban con asiduidad -desde Felipe II a Carlos II-, así como relevantes miembros de la corte -el duque de Lerma , Don Juan de Austria- donantes y mecenas habituales de ambas fundaciones. En estos edificios se desarrolló un microsistema político -otra corte- junto a la del Alcázar, con ámbitos áulicos donde se mezclaban una peculiar devoción femenina y una efectiva red política internacional de la monarquía, que integraba y relacionaba lugares como Lisboa, Bruselas, Viena, Praga o Florencia.
