Como sucedía en muchas regiones de la Europa occidental durante la baja edad mediana, el País Valenciano se encontraba formado por una apretada red de villas que integraban su territorio. Una de las más importantes fue Alzira, y en su vallado amurallado y en otras poblaciones de la comarca de la Ribera del Júcar, un colectivo que destacó fueron los artesanos. Más allá de la ciudad de Valencia, tuvieron lugar toda una serie de actividades artesanales, con un amplio abanico de profesiones. Así, en esta obra se abordan cuestiones como el papel de los varios miembros de la unidad familiar, las diferencias socioeconómicas de los artesanos o su relación con las élites aldeanas. En definitiva, a partir de un ámbito geográfico concreto y de un grupo social determinado, se hace una aproximación a la complejidad del sistema feudal vigente al País Valenciano desde el siglo xiii al xv. ?

La historiografía social vigente sobre la industrialización ha sido poco prolífica en cuanto al estudo del artesanado y su adaptación al mundo moderno. Referencias escuetas y asunciones apriorísticas, han generado una imagen distorsionada y, en cierto modo, estereotipada en torno a ese colectivo laboral y social..El artesanado barcelonés a lo largo del siglo XIX, el de la industrialización, se presenta como un magnífico ejemplo para entender las tensiones y respuestas de determinados grupos sociales a los desafíos de la Era de las Manufacturas. Los hombres y mujeres que poblaron los pequeños talleres urbanos lejos de convertirse en las víctimas pasivas de un cambio económico y social sin precedentes, supieron adaptarse e incluso integrarse en dicho proceso. Sin embargo, no fue un camino fácil, las viejas familias menestrales tuvieron que construir e imaginar un cosmos laboral nuevo en el que la tradición fue la mejor forma de afrontar la modernidad.
