Esta obra, consecuencia de una tesis doctoral, es una biografía histórica de una figura notable de la Ilustración española: Juan Sempere y Guarinos (Elda, 1754-1830). El análisis de la abundante y variada obra de Sempere muestra los rasgos y los temas característicos del ideario ilustrado español, que, aun con sus peculiaridades propias, se halla sustancialmente inserto en las coordenadas de la Ilustración europea, especialmente la que madura durante la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII y padece las transformaciónes generadas por la Revolución francesa y el primer Liberalismo decimonónico. En este sentido, Sempere y Guarinos merece estar entre el elenco de los grandes de la Ilustración española, Jovellanos, Campomanes, Cadalso, Forner, Moratín, Martínez Marina...
