El llibre cobreix tota la història de la Generalitat de Catalunya, des dels orígens medievals fins al moment present. Està dividit en tres blocs- època medieval, època moderna i època contemporània- que inclouen diferents capítols, escrits cada un per un especialista en la matèria. Els capítols corresponents a l'època medieval segueixen dues línies, una d'estrictament cronològica i una altra sobre l'estudi de l'economia i la nova fiscalitat administrada per la Generalitat. Hi ha cinc capítols que analitzen l'evolució de la Diputació del General a l'edat moderna, i el capítol titulat "Catalunya sense Generalitat" enllaça l'antiga Generalitat i la contemporània, que és analitzada fins a l'any 2004. La publicació d'aquest llibre commemora els sis-cents cinquantè aniversari del naixement de la Generalitat de Catalunya.
